,A Mutually Supportive Community
Sunflower Cohousing's aim is to build a mutually supportive community that is sustainable in the long term. We believe this is best achieved through the fullest possible integration into French society in general, and our local community in particular.
By growing as much of our own food as possible, and through water and energy conservation methods, we hope to make full use of what nature provides, lowering our own costs, but without negatively impacting the environment.
Above all, our outlook is pragmatic. The life balance we are looking for - between work, rest and play - can only be achieved by the community finding its own balance between the privacy of individuals and households on the one hand, and the solidarity of community life on the other.
Sunflower Cohousing and the SCI
All the assets on our property - land, buildings and equipment - are owned by the SCI du Tournesol which is, in turn, owned by its shareholders. Each individual investor owns an equal share and has an equal voice in terms of capital spending and so on. New investors will need to match the investment of existing shareholders and will, in the same way, gain equal rights with the others in the control of the SCI. These rights are enshrined in the SCI's articles which have the full force of law under the French constitution.
Shareholders lease their private houses from the SCI under a tenancy agreement which will largely be matched by their annual dividend from the SCI (though rents will vary with house size). The purpose of the SCI is to support Sunflower Cohousing and its aims. Members of the community (whether they are SCI shareholders or not) are expected to contribute a small number of "community hours" each week to the work of the community. All policy discussions and decisions of Sunflower Cohousing are open to all the residents on an equal footing (only decisions involving capital are reserved for shareholders).
